Decorate in Small Spaces

Even in a big house, finding space can be an issue. Once I moved from 1200 square feet to twice that, I thought all of my decor issues were solved. Room for everything right? Now I find the challenge in a big space is keeping the focus and intimacy. I’ve done this by creating “small spaces” or vignettes with special things.

This little corner by my staircase is too small to use just anything there.  I could fit a small writing desk, architectural chair or sculpture, or extra lighting with a pendant or floor lamp, but our house leans more towards minimal-more open space verses filling every corner with cool furniture. (Very hard to resist!) Instead, I’m using this random space to create warmth and a personal touch.  I’ve created a permanent place for farmer’s market flowers, a sweetheart photo of my nana and papa, & a funny lamp I got as a birthday gift.

My other tip for decorating in small spaces or big ones too, is using special things for function. This vintage brass peacock bowl is a great catch all for jewelry, cotton balls, & paper clips. Here I use it to hold all of my coffee must haves. This way, I incorporate a beautiful thrift store find into every morning cup of jo so I can appreciate it often.

I like to rotate all the treasures I find around the house.  A little bowl is easy to change and keeps the house current for the season or trends.  All the decor in this post are second hand finds, or gifts.  I rarely splurge on decor since I change my mind so often.  You don’t have to spend a lot to get a lot.

I hope these tips will inspire you to decorate in small spaces. Find the unused small spaces in your home for big potential to add function and beauty every day.  Please share how this inspired you!
